Studying at Fachhochschule St. Pölten
The Fachhochschule St. Pölten offers students a vocationally orientated and academically sound training that prepares them to meet the challenges of the professional world. Each course combines a solid grounding in the subjects with a specialisation, ensuring that graduates are equipped to fulfil a variety of professional tasks in their future careers. Alongside they acquire additional training in e.g. business administration, law, foreign languages, and interpersonal skills. Students can choose to acquire international certificates (e.g. Cisco, Microsoft, Cambridge). Work placements ensure that they gain hands-on experience in the workplace even before graduation. In their last semester, the students write a thesis and, after completion of a final exam, are awarded an academic degree.
Teaching is by lectures, laboratory work and small tutorial groups. The lecturers strive to give optimal support and promote practical work and team projects. Among the facilities of the university are a library, state-of-the art video, computer, network and multimedia laboratories and satellite equipment. The students run their own radio station, ‘Campus Radio 94.4’.

Internationalisation
As a participant in the Erasmus programme, the university encourages students to spend a semester or academic year studying or working abroad. There is a lively exchange of students and lecturers with partner universities across Europe and in Latin America. International students studying at St. Pölten can rely on the support of an academic tutor assigned to them personally and on the support of the ‘International Student Network’ (ISN), a peer organisation that looks after exchange students from abroad and helps them integrate into the student community. The ISN also organises daytrips, sparetime activities and parties.

While teaching at St. Pölten is primarily in German, an increasing number of lectures and seminars are being held in English. German language classes are offered to all international students.

ICT Module in English:
Students of technology can choose to do a programme of 30 ECTS credits in English. The ICT Module is only available in the Winter Term.

In accordance with the aims of the Bologna Declaration, the European Credit Transfer System is used consistently and Diploma Supplements are issued to graduates. The switch to the Bachelor/Master structure in all academic programmes was completed by the year 2007.

Research and Development
The Fachhochschule has taken part in a number of national and international research projects (e.g. Equal, FHplus, Interreg). The Department of Research and Development was founded in 2001 and co-ordinates all research projects and scientific activities undertaken at the Fachhochschule. Research and Development is organised with a major participation of lecturers and students in the projects. This ensures that research and instruction are directly linked. R&D puts special emphasis on co-operations with partners in and outside Austria and is committed to an interdisciplinary approach. An academic journal is published annually.

Location
The campus is located at 15 Matthias Corvinus-Straße, only a short walking distance from the town centre and the railway station. Two modern student hostels are situated nearby. St. Pölten is within easy reach of Vienna both by car and railway.

Social life
St. Pölten, the capital of Lower Austria, has 50,000 inhabitants and is the major school and university centre in the province. Besides many cultural events throughout the year (Festival Hall, Landesmuseum, Cinema Paradiso), the town has more than 100 modern sport facilities and over 100 acres of sport fields. The student community organises sport events and competitions as well as other leisure activities and the monthly ‘FH Club Nights’. There are a few pubs and bars in the centre of the town, and the more cosmopolitan life of Vienna can be reached within 45 min. on the train. Lakes and forests, skiing and snowboarding resorts and the wine-growing region of the Wachau are nearby.
