The Plovdiv Branch of Technical University – Sofia is the leading university in the field of engineering and technology in the south of Bulgaria and a prestigious and respected part of the Technical University – Sofia.
Over 2,000 BSc, MSc and PhD students study at TU-Sofia, Plovdiv Branch, part of them being foreigners from Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Jordan, China, etc.
The duration of the training of the students for acquiring a Bachelor’s academic degree is eight semesters. Students having earned a Bachelor’s degree can continue their studies with three more semesters towards a Master’s degree.
The Branch ensures qualitative education in a broad range of Bachelor’s degree courses and specialized Master’s degree courses which meet the demands of the Bulgarian industry.
Under the current rating system of higher education institutions in Bulgaria, TU-Sofia, including the Branch ranks first in the professional areas, in which these specialties are included.
The diplomas of engineers, having graduated from the Technical University of Sofia and its Plovdiv Branch are recognized all over the world.
The structure of TU-Sofia, Plovdiv Branch includes two faculties: Faculty of Electronics and Automation and Faculty of Mechanical and Instrument Engineering.

QUALIFICATION COURSES
The Centre for Post-graduate Studies provides opportunities for obtaining an additional professional qualification in specific fields. On request of firms and administrative bodies the Centre carries out specialised training and provides consultancy ad hoc.
Short-term courses are offered with a duration of up to one semester for training in specialised software (AutoCad, SolidWorks, etc.), for preparation of candidate-students, for qualifying specialists in the field of safety of machinery, technology, energy, etc.
Long-term training provides profound knowledge and skills targeted at narrow specialisation in a selected area. The duration of training is 2 to 3 semesters.

RESEARCH and DEVELOPMENT
Science in the Plovdiv Branch of Sofia Technical University is targeted at developing research and applied projects by highly qualified lecturers, PhD and MSc students and technicians, who conduct research and development and provide consulting services on a contractual basis.
Lecturers from the Plovdiv Branch of TU work on projects funded by the National Science Fund of the Ministry of Science and Education and on projects supported by the Research and Development Sector of the Technical University – Sofia. Research teams from the Branch work on projects funded by the Innovation Fund of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism. The academic staff also takes part in international projects as part of Framework Programme 7 and COST.
The R&D also includes doctoral thesis preparation and publishing of scientific papers in journals and at various forums. Many articles are published in renowned science magazines, and papers – presented at international conferences in Bulgaria and abroad.
The TechSys International Scientific Conferences are organised biannually in the Plovdiv Branch of TU. Another conference on Management and Entrepreneurship is organized annually by the Entrepreneurship Centre at the university. Traditionally these fora gather together scientists from many countries.
An annual Journal of the Technical University, Plovdiv Branch is issued, containing papers in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Automation and Computer Sciences.
Major R&D fields covered by the academic staff are as follows:

THE INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE PLOVDIV BRANCH
OF SOFIA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY ARE CARRIED OUT IN THE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS:
● Bilateral cooperation
The Plovdiv Branch of Sofia Technical University maintains intensive contacts and has signed bilateral cooperation agreements with 30 universities from 13 countries within the framework of Erasmus programme.
● Participation in European educational and research programmes
Cooperation with higher education and research institutions is carried out as part of the European educational and research programmes and professional networks for scientists.
Due to the involvement in these programmes, students are provided with opportunities for temporary study or preparation of theses, as well as placements at partner universities and institutions abroad. The academic staff has the opportunities for short and long-term specialisations.

THE PLOVDIV BRANCH OF SOFIA TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN PROJECTS UNDER THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMMES:

LANGUAGE AND SPECIALISED TRAINING FOR FOREIGNERS
There is a preparatory school for foreign students at the Plovdiv campus of TU – Sofia where in the course of two semesters foreign students are taught Bulgarian, mathematics, physics and informatics. After a successful completion of the preparatory year they are enrolled as first year students according to their desired speciality. Foreign university applicants are expected to submit a copy of their diploma for completed high-school education in the country of origin and an official record of subjects studied and grades achieved. The documents should be translated into Bulgarian and verified (stamped) in the Bulgarian Embassy in the country of origin.
The duration of a full-time Bachelor’s Degree programme is four years. The full-time study towards a Master’s Degree is three more semesters.

STUDENT LIFE
The Student Council is a self-governing body of the students at the Plovdiv Branch of STU. It is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-ethnic organisation registered under the law of higher education.
The Student Council aims at setting up a friendly academic and social environment among the students through:
● monitoring and putting forward suggestions for the quality of the educational process;
● organising intellectual, cultural and public events;
● taking care of social matters and conditions of life of the students;
● participating in the distribution of student scholarships and financial aid.
Student life at the Branch is filled with a variety of events. Career days are organised twice a year, which are a meeting point of students and businesses providing opportunities to find internships and jobs in leading companies in Bulgaria and abroad.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTRE PLOVDIV
Found in 1990 as Higher School of Economics and Management at the Plovdiv Branch of Sofia Technical University, in 2006 it evolved into PLOVDIV Entrepreneurship Centre as a result of a successful project with the Ministry of Industry and Economy.
The aim of PLOVDIV Entrepreneurship Centre is to educate, inspire and promote a new generation of entrepreneurs, associated with the universities in the South-central Planning Region of Bulgaria, who shall improve the structure of the regional economy and boost the local and national technological and economic potential.
The target audience of the entrepreneurship centre includes students, graduates, lecturers and staff of universities in the South-central Region, as well as young local entrepreneurs.
PLOVDIV Entrepreneurship Centre organizes:
• certificate courses, seminars and discussions related to entrepreneurship, business planning, project development, Internet site development;
• meetings with successful entrepreneurs;
• annual conference Management and Entrepreneurship;
• annual round table on the issues of management and entrepreneurship education;
• student competition Best Idea for Starting Up Your Own Business;
• provides consulting services to young entrepreneurs;
• partners the StartUp@Plovdiv Entrepreneurship Conference, organized by StartUp Foundation
PLOVDIV Entrepreneurship Centre provides knowledge, environment and contacts to empower young entrepreneurial people plan, start up and develop successful enterprises.

LIBRARY
The library at the Plovdiv Branch of Sofia Technical University, was established in 1986 and it has been developing as an up-to-date information centre. Nowadays, there are over 100,000 library units available and a total out area of 748 m2.
The library is linked to the university LAN. It has 10 workstations and provides an opportunity for wireless internet.
The library offers a wide range of traditional and modern services: drawing up bibliographical references, bibliographical lists, on-line database search, inter-library loans, etc.
The following electronic resources can be used in the library: bibliographic and full-text research databases on-line – ScienceDirect, ProQuest, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Engineering Village, EBSCOPublishing and journals of SpringerLink.
The library uses AL Automated Library Software ).
The university library is a partner in a consortium of five university libraries in Plovdiv. A shared academic library network called Time for АL has been set up with a joint electronic catalogue, accessible through a common Web portal.
