The Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw is a state school of pedagogical profile with full academic rights. It is not only the biggest academy of such kind in Poland, but also one of the biggest in Europe in the field of physical culture. It educates teachers of physical education, coaches and specialists in the field of rehabilitation, recreation and tourism, it is also a centre of scientific research and a sport centre. The Academy was established in 1929, following the initiative of Marshall Józef Piłsudski, as the Centralny Instytut Wychowania Fizycznego – CIWF (Central Institute of Physical Education), a military professional school. In 1935 the Institute was granted the name of the First Polish Marshall Józef Piłsudski; in 1938 CIWF was transformed into an academic school – the Józef Piłsudski Academy of Physical Education. During World War 2 the facilities and sport premises, laboratories and libraries were destroyed, and numerous lecturers, students and graduates were killed in the warfare. Reconstructed from wartime destruction, the Academy resumed once again its activity in 1946, and continued its dynamic development. Further to the decree of the Council of Ministers dated 27 July 1949 CIWF was transformed as a military vocational school into an academic school – Academy of Physical Education. In the academic year 1952/53 the Academy started extramural studies, and a year later 4-year master studies were introduced. Further to the Act of 8 June 1990 the old name was given back – the Józef Piłsudski Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. In 1970 an external division of the Academy in Biała Podlaska, and in 1973 consultation units in Białystok, Lublin, Mielec, Łódź and Pruszków were established. In 1971 Instytut Naukowy Kultury Fizycznej (Scientific Institute of Physical Culture) was incorporated into the Academy; at the same time also Doctorate Studies and In-Service Training Classes were launched. In 1984 the Faculty of Movement Recreation, as well as Institute of Physical Education and Sport of the Academy in Łódź, which was then in 1991 joined to the structure of the Łódź University, were all set up The Academy, which is situated in the picturesque surroundings of the Bielany Forest (a nature reserve), has outstanding characteristic architecture of its educational facilities, built in the years 1928-1930 according to designs of E. Norwerth, as well as numerous didactic pavilions and sport facilities. In 2002 the Academy of Physical Education was entered into the register of monuments. The Academy issues such scientific periodicals, as: “Scientific Annuals”, quarterly magazine “Physical Education and Sport” and “Advances in Rehabilitation”, a bi-monthly “Physical Culture”, as well as various studies and monographs, textbooks and printed summaries of course lectures; it organises seminars, symposiums, conventions and conferences – both at national and international levels; teaching and didactic contacts are being maintained with numerous universities and scientific centres in Poland and abroad; the staff of the Academy is working in scientific societies, organisations and sport associations in Poland and on the international arena; the activities of the Academy’s staff affects directly fields in the development of sciences related to physical culture, education of its staff, as well as the development of Polish competitive sport.

In the Academy of Physical Education courses are run in the full time and part-time systems (evening classes and extramural) in the fields of:
physical education
tourism and recreation
physiotherapy.

The studies are divided into a 2-level system: first degree studies (3-year bachelor studies) and second degree studies (2-year supplementing master studies), as well as uniform 4,5–year master studies.

The Faculty of Physical Education offers third degree studies – at doctorate level, which is run as full time and part time (extramural).

Students have the possibility of undertaking optional specialisations in diverse disciplines of sport and recreation, fields of physical and health education. The Academy also runs post-graduate studies in selected fields of physical education, health education and sport, as well as physiotherapy.

Field of physical education

Studies in the field of physical education include the following groups of subjects: general education subjects, elementary subjects and specialisation and specialty subjects. Students have mandatory teaching practice in primary schools, middle school and in a secondary school, as well as training camps: a summer camp, a trekking camp and a winter camp.

Description of a graduate in the physical education field - first level

The graduate obtains the professional title of bachelor. Such a graduate should have the necessary biological and social knowledge, and abilities allowing competent application of physical means on the organism, should be familiar with teaching methods to affect the personality, as well as be prepared for professional work as a physical education teacher. Such a graduate may seek employment in primary and secondary schools, non-school education establishments, sports organisations and physical culture centres.

Description of a graduate in the physical education field – second level

The graduate obtains the professional title of master. Education of a graduate in natural and social sciences, as well as mastering abilities for teaching movement and fitness improvement, allows competent application of physical means on an organism and social means on personality to satisfy immediate needs of pupils in the scope of somatic and motor development and their teaching to caring for health, fitness and body build on completion of their own education. The graduate is familiar with methods for diagnosing and forecasting physical and mental development; has the ability to programme means for physical education and upbringing and teaching culture and sensitivity, which assure effective implementation of school and non-school lessons in physical education, sport, recreation and tourism for school age youth.

The graduates may find employment in primary, middle and secondary schools, higher schools, educational centres, sports clubs and in social organisations related to physical culture and tourism.

Field of tourism and recreation

Studies in the field of tourism and recreation include the following groups of subjects: general education subjects, elementary subjects and specialisation and specialty subjects.
The students have mandatory in-service training and camps: summer camp – adventure tourism, trekking camp and winter camp.

Description of a graduate in the tourism and recreation field – first level studies

The graduate of the first degree studies obtains the professional title of bachelor. Such a graduate shall have suitable knowledge related to nature, sociology, economics and organisational and legal issues as well as practical abilities allowing professional work in the field of tourism and recreation. A graduate of the tourism and recreation field may find employment in travel offices, hotels, rest centres, sport and recreation centres, as well as in administration and social organisations on managerial and executive posts related to tourism and recreation.

Description of a graduate in the tourism and recreation field – second level studies

The graduate obtains the professional master title. The graduate will have humanistic knowledge, which would allow him to comprehend social relations and processes reflected in tourism and recreation and to find out human needs; knowledge of nature – allowing him to understand the system man-environment; and also knowledge of economic, organisational and legal issues which allow an evaluation and conscious utilisation of mechanisms typical of market economy. The graduate shall have mastered the following skills: management and individual planning and implementation of complex organisational undertakings related to tourism and recreation, independent development and execution of tourist events, recreational activities and events, free contacts with people and use of foreign languages.
The graduate shall be prepared to occupy posts in entities that service tourist traffic and recreation, work in hotels and rest houses, recreational centres and also work in local government administrative authorities on posts responsible for the development of tourism and recreation, as well as in social organisations.

Field of physiotherapy

In the Faculty of Rehabilitation education progresses in the field of physiotherapy and includes the following groups of subjects: general education subjects, elementary subjects and field and vocational subjects. Students have mandatory in-service training (clinical) in health centres, as well as summer and winter camps.

Description of a graduate in the physiotherapy field

A graduate of the first level studies is awarded with the professional title of a bachelor. The graduate shall have acquired theoretical and practical abilities that are indispensable for the profession of physiotherapist: improvement of fitness and movement capacities of persons at different age, lost or impaired as a consequence of diverse ailments or injuries; developing and maintaining fitness and movement capacities of persons with disabilities appropriately to their abilities; adaptation of activities to superior targets of rehabilitation of particular individuals within operation of rehabilitation teams.
A graduate of the second level studies obtains the professional title of master, and should also have the knowledge and abilities for solving problems connected with planning, execution and controlling the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process.
Knowledge and abilities acquired during the studies entitle the graduate to finding employment in public and non-public health centres, educational establishments (in corrective gymnastic units), in establishments of protected labour and occupational therapy workshops, establishments operating in the field related to sport for persons with disabilities, biological restitution units in sport clubs or fitness centres, in high schools and physiotherapy studies.
