Erasmus Program: 2 Million Students Mark Reached

According to data published by the European Union, the Erasmus student exchange program has helped a total of 2 million students to study abroad since its launch in 1987. The new figures also show a continuation of the growing mobility of both European students and staff: "the increase for study mobility alone was of 2.1 %," with a total of over 162,000 new Erasmus students in the academic year 2007/2008. After the release of these figures, Ján Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, called the Erasmus program "a European success story" and went on to say that the European Commission "would like to build on the success of Erasmus and offer such opportunities to all young people who want to go abroad for learning."
