EU and USA Lay Foundation for Stronger Educational Co-Operation

October 8th and 9th, 2009, saw the first EU-US Education policy forum, organized as a joint venture between the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Education, taking place in Washington, DC. According to a press release by the European Commission, this was only the most recent in a series of meetings and negotiations that "have led to significant advances in the co-operation between the EU and the USA in education."

During this first-ever EU-US Education Policy Dialogue, both sides called for a stronger co-operation in terms of university and business relations as well as student exchanges. The forum allowed for "fruitful exchanges about education policies [...] as well as on the newly-created European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)." Ms. Martha Kanter, US Under Secretary of Education, summed up: "The first EU-US Education Policy Forum provided us an unprecedented opportunity to foster mutual understanding and deepen transatlantic co-operation."
