UNESCO Launches World Digital Library

On April 21, 2009, UNESCO, along with 32 partner institutions, launched the World Digital Library. The web site features free unlimited access to cultural material from around the world, including manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, prints, and photographs. According to UNESCO, the program's aim is "to expand the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet, provide resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences, and narrow the digital divide within and between countries by building capacity in partner countries." The WDL is available in seven major languages and can be found at www.wdl.org.
